THE SMASHING PUMPKINS: New Song Available For Free Download

January 19, 2010

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have issued a brand new track called "Widow Wake My Mind", available exclusively as a free download for 24 hours through MySpace Music. The song marks the second release from the band's in-progress 44-song project "Teargarden By Kaleidyscope". "Widow" was the top marquee song at MySpace yesterday and can be downloaded at this location. It will also be featured Tuesday at MySpace and via a cross-promotion at www.ilike.com. Then starting today, it will be available at www.smashingpumpkins.com and the site also offers a widget enabling fans to host the song anywhere on the web.

PUMPKINS leader Billy Corgan is releasing the 44 songs of "Teargarden By Kaleidyscope" one at a time, completely for free. The first track, "A Song For A Son" — issued December 7, 2009 — was praised in Rolling Stone, where Jody Rosen said, "A completely great mini-epic full of nonsense lyrics ('This is a song for a space invader/Who flew into the sun/Never to return') that builds over a stately piano into a wind-whipped guitar-strafed climax. Proof that Billy Corgan remains a master of the classic rock form — a man who can sing, with no apology or embarrassment, 'This is a song for a dove/This is a song for a blown out bird'" (1/21/10).

Corgan has said "Teargarden By Kaleidyscope" "is based on 'The Fool's Journey', as signified in the progress of the Tarot, the intention is to approach the work by breaking down the journey of life into four phases as made by different characters depicted in major arcana cards: the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic and the Mystic."

The music will not only be issued online, Corgan has revealed. "We will sell highly limited edition EPs (of four songs each times eleven),and details of how those EPs will be made available are still being worked out. Because the songs themselves will be free, the EPs will be more like collector's items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available. The EPs will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal CD single. We may also offer other variations for sale — say for example, a digital single with a demo version of a song."
